Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, was brutally murdered by Iran’s “morality police” for defying the country’s severe dress code restrictions and exposing some of her hair.
The murder of Mahsa Amini has spurred demonstrations across the country. Those protesting the authoritarian government are yelling phrases like “Let women live in freedom” and “I will murder whoever killed my sister.”
The actress sent a message on Instagram expressing her support for Iranian women who are now shaving their heads and burning their hijabs in protest.
The actress posted a number of images and text passages describing the situation in Iran along with the message, “We see you, we hear you, and we are with you #MahsaAmini.”
The US government’s choice to treat Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi like royalty at the UN General Assembly session and the fact that the western media was largely silent about what was occurring in Iran seemed to particularly irk the actress.
